F*ck COVID-19 - Here's 19 Self-care Tips While in Lockdown

At the risk of adding another opinion or piece of content to the COVID19 saga that is currently consuming all of us, one thing I have noticed personally is an absolute feeling of helplessness and uncertainty.

I’m one of the lucky ones.  I have a job that isn’t going anywhere, and really, if Canvast slows down for a few months, I’ll be ok. Not everyone is in that position. Some of you are, and will be, struggling for a little while.

I realise that now more than ever, self care is one of the most important things you can be doing for yourself.  I think it’s also important to do our best to make the most of whatever is in front of us.

I wanted to put together a list of things you can do whilst in your isolation bubble.  They also don’t cost a single thing. May as well make the most of this shit show, right?

  1. Have a movie marathon – drag your mattress out into the lounge, pump the air con, tuck yourself into a doona, make some stovetop popcorn and lose yourself in some movies for a few hours. Bliss.
  1. Deep clean your home – yep, sugar soap the walls, get in behind the washing machine, mop the floors, scrub that baby from top to bottom. Clean space = clear mind.
  1. Play board games – if you’re in isolation with a few housemates, even better.  Crack a bottle of wine and enjoy having a laugh with friends!
  1. Exercise at home – there are so many resources out there at the moment all catering for those stuck at home (which I love) but some of my favs are @wearesoba who are doing Instagram live workouts every day and @kaylaitsines who gives you at home workouts that are predominantly body weight only, no equipment required.
  1. Read your books – y’know the ones that have been sitting on your shelf after you’ve told yourself you’d get around to reading when you had ‘more time’? Yep. It’s time.
  1. Declutter your closet and reorganise with minimalism in mind – while I’m here, clean out your entire room.  Your bedroom should be your sanctuary. It can’t feel like a sanctuary if you’re surrounded by sh*t you no longer need.  When cleaning out your closet, remove anything that you haven’t used in 12 months. If you can bear to donate it or throw it out, box it up and put it in your garage.  If you don’t get anything out of said box in another 12 months, it’s time to donate babe. I can’t tell you how cathartic it is to remove clutter from your life. IT’S ALMOST BETTER THAN SEX.
  1. Bake/cook something with what’s in your pantry – Get creative. I’m sure there’s items in your pantry that could be put together to make some magic.  Waste not, want not right? Make Grandma proud.
  1. Whilst we’re at the pantry – let’s clean that sucker out.  I’m sure there’s lids without tupperware containers in there, flour that expired in 1996, weevils have probably set up shop in a few of those containers at the back of the cupboard – are you even sure what that substance is? Ringing any bells?
  1. Go for a walk and listen to a podcast – no pace in mind, no distance you have to cover…just walk and enjoy it. Switch off, listen to the podcast and escape from reality for a little bit.  Some fav podcasts are Happy Hour with Lucy and Nikki, Shameless and Seize the Yay with Sarah Davidson.
  1. Journal your feelings out – let’s not downplay it, things are pretty rough at the moment.  Journal your little heart out and get how you’re feeling down on paper. Finish it with a nice stretch to some meditation music. Ahhhh bliss the f*ck out.
  1. Make a COVID19 playlist – if you’re going to be stuck at home, you may as well have a good playlist to have a dance party to!
  1. Clean your balcony and make it a retreat space for a tea/book session. How nice is it to be able to sit with a little bit of Vitamin D, a good book and a cuppa? If you’re anything like me, your outdoor space probably needs a bit of TLC.  Show it some, then sit back and use it.
  1. Have a home spa day – get out the face masks, paint your toes, shave your legs, moisturise, use a hair mask, rope your housemate or significant other into giving you a hand massage and use that eye cream that you swore you’d use every night before bed.
  1. Sleep in (guilt free) – be honest, how long has it been since you didn’t set an alarm and let yourself sleep in? Pick a day this week, where you do NOTHING, except sleep in, make a beautiful breakfast, have a coffee in the sun, read your book, listen to some chill tunes….how good does that sound?!
  1. Meal prep some freezer friendly meals – use whats left in your fridge to make some ‘cant-be-f*cked’ tonight dinners for when you need them most.
  1. Facetime your friends – reach out to your loved ones and catch up.  Set a time with them, have a coffee or wine ready, make yourself comfortable on the couch and spend some quality time with the besties, 2020 corona style.
  1. Plan a romantic date night at home – whether you have a significant other, or YOU are the best thing to ever happen to you, plan a beautiful night in, light some candles, order a nice meal from your fav local joint (saves cooking AND helps the economy) and finish with …. a good….. *ahem* ….cuddle.
  1. Revisit your goals – now is the best time to sit down and have a look at your goals. We’re about to enter the second quarter for 2020.  Do you need to pivot? Set some new goals? Really laser focus on one thing next month? Sit down and work out what that looks like for you.  Really deep dive and make the most of this time to figure out what you want 2020 to look like for you and how you’ll make it happen.
  1. Smash out your to-do list – while you’re with your planner, let’s get to work and spend some time crossing those jobs off the list.  I’m notorious for putting things off. Set an alarm for 60 minutes, and smash it out. Rest and reward yourself after the hour, then set another. Keep going til you’re all caught up!

Now, you won’t be able to do all of these at once, and you definitely won’t be able to do them all in a day.  Spread them out. Do some of them. Do all of them. Do one of them. Do what you feel pulled to do. What feels good or right at the time.  There are no rules. This is about taking care of yourself and making the most of the time that you have during this weird time.

Enjoy.  And as always, if you need to, reach out.

Look after yourself. Em x
