Are You A Procrastinator?

Procrastination. We are all guilty of it. Some more so than others. Whether we’re avoiding cleaning our house, finishing an assignment, sending an email or submitting an important project.

Oh hi there, it’s me. The Queen Procrastinator 👑 *sometimes*

For instance, over the last two months, I have been procrastinating writing this blog. No sh*t. I’ve started writing it at least six times, I’ve also changed the subject each time. And because I’ve been writing it for two months, I’ve also pushed the “due date” out further and further and further (you get the point). I procrastinated TF outta this task.

But why?

It would be easy to tell you, “I’ve just been so busy, I didn’t have time!” or “I had other things to do that were more important”, but it’s all bullsh*t. Let’s dig a little deeper shall we.

Imposter Syndrome

Imposter syndrome is a very real thing, it’s something I struggle with. If I really think about it, I’ve struggled with imposter syndrome since I was in high school.

Imposter syndrome is described as the chronic feeling of inadequacy and incompetence, despite success. Alexandra Owens writes in an article that a common indicator may be “when you achieve success, you attribute it to luck or describe it as a fluke.”

It is something that creeps in when I am writing/creating any type of content to post on social media. Why? Because I get so much anxiety around whether people relate, or if they’ll read it, or if it’s good enough? It’s totally a me problem.

So instead of writing the damn blog, I’ll literally find anything else to do. I’ll procrastinate and I’ll keep procrastinating in the hopes that it might just go away. It won’t. I set myself the task. I am my own boss. I answer to myself. Just do it!

“I work better under pressure”

Said anyone who has ever been a serious procrastinator! Have you heard people say this? Or maybe to tell yourself this? I have. I used to say it in high school way too often. I could have an entire ten-week term to work on an English project, but best believe, I would write that sucker two days before it was due. And pass, of course.

It became a belief that I told myself. “Yes Alana, you work better under pressure.”

The problem is, the only person putting pressure on me, is me. If I don’t do something, the only person I’m letting down is myself. Funny that.

Sh*t Planning

I know that if I don’t plan out my week, it never runs as smoothly as the weeks that I do plan. It’s a fact. I’m way more productive when I know exactly what’s happening.

That’s why I love my planner (and not just because it’s aesthetically pleasing) but because when I write down my to-do list for the week, I know I’ve got to get it done.

9 times out of 10 I’ll get everything checked off my list. Sometimes the plan changes and that’s okay. The point is 9 out of 10 is better than nothing. And nothing is what happens when I don’t plan my weeks properly.

Stop Scrolling & Just Do It

What’s your procrastination go-to? Scrolling on Instagram, watching Netflix, getting stuck down a rabbit hole reading articles about how to start your side hustle but never actually doing anything? Personally, I’ll work on ‘insignificant smaller’ tasks that aren’t really helping me get what actually needs to be done done. Or Instagram scrolling, I’m a sucker for getting way too into the ‘gram.

It’s time to stop scrolling and start taking action. Write the damn blog and stop listening to that Instant Gratification Monkey in your brain.

Go on, get it done!
